- Modern Baritone & Bass Sax.
Menne Smallenbroek (b. 1988) is a multidisciplinary baritone saxophonist. He performs a vast diversity of styles and genres, most of which he composed or arranged himself. He teaches at the Muziekschool in Barneveld, and is the conductor-artistic director of SaxUs (the largest saxophone orchestra of the Netherlands). He studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espectáculo in Porto with Henk van Twillert, Fernando Ramos, and Gilberto Bernardes.
During his studies, he was part of numerous ensembles, such as Vento do Norte, Quartones, Flux Ensemble, and the European Saxophone Ensemble. He toured with these ensembles to various countries around the world, including the Dutch Carribean, Venezuela, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hunagry, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Romania, and of course the Netherlands.
Over the years, Menne has had the pleasure of working with and participating in master classes with famous musicians and composers, such as Claude Delangle (France), Mario Marzi (Italy), Patrick Zimmerli (USA), Arno Bornkamp (the Netherlands), Ties Mellema (the Netherlands), Christophe Grèzes (France), François Luis (Belgium), Joe Murphy (USA), Gary Smulyan (USA), Benjamin Taylor (USA), Chiel Meijering (the Netherlands), Gijs van Dijk (the Netherlands), Massimo Botter (Italy), and Roberto Benitez (Mexico).
For many of his projects, Menne has and continues to collaborate with Tiago Ralha, a remarkable sound designer and musician from Porto, Portugal. Their work embodies a very intense symbiotic process and pushes the envelope on electroacoustic performances. One of the projects that highlights their collaboration is the production of "Trends at Odds", which premiered on the 6th of June 2014 at Café Concerto da ESMAE in Porto.
Menne is an active member of the Trash Panda Collective. This Amsterdam based ensemble, comprised of musicians, composers, and artists, focuses on performing new electronic music within a non-conforming context.
Menne also plays in the baritone saxophone duo "DONAR", alongside Romeu Costa. This duo aims at creating new music for baritone saxophone and performs the existing repertoire with terrifying intensity.
