I made this arrangement as a reinterpretation of a Fado from Coimbra and was originally written by Ângelo Araújo. It applies Harmonic Textures for Baritone Saxophone, a technique I developed, to create a semi-harmonic base for the arrangement. It was performed live during the Amersfoort Jazz Festival in June 2017 and recorded by Connect2Multimedia O.P.S. microphone systems. @connect2multimedia

À Proa by José Afonso

I wrote this arrangement of À Proa and performed it live for my masters recital at the ESMAE in Porto, Portugal. I wrote it as an homage to the late José Afonso. A loop station was used to play the various musical phrases on the baritone saxophone. The multi-track of the live performance was then edited and mixed in collaboration with Tiago Ralha.

Program with no restraint

Perform with no dread

Never decline a challenge

Multimedia performances, subversive experiments and genre-defying music: international ensemble the Trash Panda Collective knows no boundaries.

Trash Panda was formed in Amsterdam in 2016. Rules and limitations have never really existed. Its unorthodox instrumentation, reflecting its members’ diverse musical practices and language, allows it to sound anywhere between a contemporary music ensemble and a teenage rock band rehearsing in the garage. It is still uncertain to the ensemble’s members if this is a good or a bad thing.

We are Trash Panda.

The rumbling grew louder and louder, the wind howled while “DONAR” arrived, riding the clouds of thunder.

This baritone saxophone duo puts on a spectacular display of sound with terrifying intensity.
When cold air from the north, Menne Smallenbroek (NL) met with hot air from the south, Romeu Costa (PT) a massive thunderstorm
of baritone saxophone madness was conceived. Their repertoire is like a sudden electric discharge and will continue to rumble long after the storm has past.

Live perfromance of June 6 2014 @ Café Concerto da ESMAE

Written, performed and produced by Menne Smallenbroek (baritone saxophone, live electronics) and Tiago Ralha (live electronics, processing, editing)

Special thanks to: Rui Lima, Henk van Twillert, Luis Silva and Fernando Coutinho.

Trends at Odds is a duo for baritone saxophone and live electronics written by Tiago Ralha and Menne Smallenbroek. This piece was written while participating in the course of Práticas Oficinais II – Som. This course resulted in the context of a live performance and was premiered on the 6th of June 2014 in Café Concerto at the ESMAE. The composition consists of a introduction followed by five movements: The Void, Spatial Awareness, Kinesthetic Awakening, Society, Industry, and a closing. Each movement is a representation of our initial concept, namely numerology, and aims at demonstrating various compositional tools in which the musical implication of numerology is best exemplified.

The introduction, titled Noise, resembles the beginning of everything; the Big Bang. The first movement, the Void, in which a single note is being played on the baritone saxophone, illustrates the vacuum of pure emptiness. The Second movement, Spatial Awareness, highlights a natural process similar to abiogenesis, in which the first musical information arises and the shows the first signs of life. The third movement, Kinesthetic Awakening, a beginning of intelligent life is displayed and intends on showing the physical movement. The fourth movement, Society, shows tradition being translated through a repetitive musical phrase. This movement slowly progresses intro the fifth movement, Industry, in which the wheels of the industrial revolution are imitated and played through the use of "Harmonic Textures" on the baritone saxophone. The piece ends with a closing, called reversed Noise, in which the introduction is repeated in reversed direction.
